Moving to a new home is exciting but, let’s be honest, relocation costs can add up quickly. Between movers, boxes, deposits, utility connections, cleaning, and those unexpected last-minute expenses, your moving budget can disappear before you even unpack the first box.
The good news? A little planning can save you time, money, and stress.
📦 1. Declutter Before You Pack
One of the easiest ways to save money is to move less stuff.
Before packing, go room by room and ask yourself: Do I use this? Do I need it? Would I buy it again today?
Sell furniture, clothing and household items you no longer need through Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp or local community groups. Donate what doesn't sell.
Fewer boxes can mean a smaller moving truck, fewer hours of labor and less packing material.

💰 2. Don't Pay Full Price for Moving Supplies
Before buying brand-new boxes, check local Facebook groups, Nextdoor, grocery stores, liquor stores and community centers. Many people give away boxes after their own move.
If you need supplies, compare prices and look for promotions. U-Haul offers moving supplies, discounts and promotions that can help reduce your packing costs.

📅 3. Choose the Right Time to Move
Your moving date can make a noticeable difference.
Generally, October through April is the less expensive moving season, while May through September tends to be busier. If your schedule is flexible, consider moving mid-month and Tuesday through Thursday rather than around the first or last day of the month or on a weekend.

Winter can offer lower moving rates, but always consider weather and your specific location.
🧾 4. Find Coupons & Relocation Discounts
Before booking anything, search for:
- Moving company promotions
- Truck rental discounts
- Storage specials
- Packing-supply coupons
- Employer relocation benefits
- Military and veteran discounts
- AAA or membership discounts
- Credit-card or loyalty-program offers
And don't be afraid to ask the company, “Do you have any current promotions or discounts?”
Sometimes the best savings aren't advertised prominently online.
⏰ 5. Save Time With a Moving Checklist
Don't wait until moving week to start organizing.
30 days out: Declutter, research movers and gather supplies.
2–3 weeks out: Start packing nonessential items and schedule utilities.
1 week out: Confirm movers, pack essentials and clean.
Moving day: Keep important documents, medications, chargers and valuables with you.
Also remember to update your mailing address. Use the official USPS change-of-address process rather than paying an unnecessary third-party fee.

🏡 6. Think Beyond Moving Day
If you're relocating because you're buying a home, selling your current home, moving for work, downsizing or simply looking for a better cost of living, the right relocation strategy starts before moving day.
Think about your new neighborhood, commute, schools, housing costs, lifestyle and the true cost of getting settled.
As a relocation Realtor, I help clients look beyond the house and think about the whole move.
